Nothing could be more beautiful than to use sunflowers in your wedding arrangements.  You may not think that there is much to know about the sunflower.  After all, the plant is everywhere.  Yet it has something more than a simple, straightforward history and is more of a globe trotter than you may imagine.  Thanks to a great article I came upon going over the history of the sunflower, I’ll try to give you a brief synopsis of what I read, or you can visit the article HERE.

Would you believe that sunflowers actually originate in North America and was primarily grown as a food source providing gatherers a natural source of fat.  The seeds were ground up and mixed with flour to make bread and were cross breeded to produce even larger seeds.  The sunflower we see today bears no resemblance to the initial plant that was cultivated in south-western parts of Mexico.  It has been suggested that the sunflower was domesticated before corn and the Cherokee actually farmed the plant.

Down south in Mexico, the Aztecs cultivated the plant along with worshipping it.  In their sun temples, the priestesses would wear headdresses made of sunflowers to give themselves the air of the divine.

Yet no one would have guessed what the future of the sunflower held – and the travels it would endure.  Click on the link below to read more about this fantastic plant and how it was used in early civilization socities.
